Regler have been trying to get to the bottom of our concepts of musical genre for ages now: from the breadth of the source of all modern rock, (Regel#9: Blues) to the most narrowly-defined sub-sub-genre of them all (Regel#4: Harsh Noise Wall) . Now they tackle the most obtuse non-genre of them all, "No Wave".

If No Wave is the rejection of punk rock cliche, then what is Regler the rejection of? Or maybe Regler aren't about rejection at all; they're maximalists who take the fulcrum of an idea and smash the fuck out of it for an hour until neither they nor the listener can take any more. How does this apply to No Wave? A discordant guitar line, played over and over? A thousand skronking saxphones? Repetition?

NO!

How do you musically characterise a movement that defined itself by negation, rejection?

You don't.

I cannot praise this album enough. This album is absolutely terrifying! The many starts and stops creates this very h settling tension. Each start expands on the stopper idea previously. It’s like the music equivalent of walking through thick fog while passing out multiple times throughout trying to find a place to orientate yourself. There may or may not be something sinister in that fog, but you don’t want to stick around to find out. Bought the vinyl so I summon the fog demons through spe showhornwithteeth
